About Moga District (Punjab)

Moga district is a district of Punjab state with its administrative headquarters located at Moga city. The district got its name from its headquarters city i.e. Moga. For the first time Moga Singh Gill, a forefather of the Gill community was founded the city of Moga and hence the city was named after him. After his death the Moga city automatically went into the hands of his two sons namely Moga Ajit Singh Gill and Moga Manjit Singh Gill. On 24th November, 1995 the then Chief Minister of Punjab named Harcharan Singh Brar made the Moga city a part and an administrative headquarters of the Moga district. Prior to that Moga as a tehsil was a part of the Faridkot district. The Dharamkot block of Punjab state with its 150 villages were merged into the Moga district during the time of its formation and it comes under the jurisdiction of the Ferozpur division.

Lala Lajpat Rai, an illustrious Indian Punjabi author, politician and a notable leader in the Indian Independence movement was born on 28th January, 1865 in the district. He was popularly known as Punjab Kesari.

Geographically, the district lies at 30°82' N latitude, 75°17' E longitude and 217 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 0.38% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 2,242 sq km. and it is bounded by Jalandhar district on the North, Sangrur district on the South, Ludhiana district on the East and Faridkot district and Firozpur district on the West. The climate of the district remains extremely hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 468.5 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 4 tehsils namely Moga, Baghapurana, Nihal Singh Wala and Dharamkot. Moreover, it comprises 5 towns and 319 villages. The administrative language in the district is Punjabi.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 9,95,746 out of which 5,25,920 are males and 4,69,826 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 893 females for every 1000 males. In the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 11.27% including 10.92% were males and 11.67% were females. The population density in the district is 444 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 12,734 out of which 6,479 were males and 6,255 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 8,241 out of which 4,830 were males and 3,411 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Sikh and Hindu with 82.24% and 15.91% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Punjabi with 96.21%.

The economy of the district is mainly dependent on industries. Most of its lands are use for industrial purposes. More than half of its population are engaged in various industries in order to earn their livelihood. The chief industries in the district are Nestle Moga, Adani Agri Logistics Ltd, Jeep trimming industry, etc. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from these industries helps in its economy to a great extent. India's first Nestle production plant was launched in the Moga city in 1961 which was termed as "Jewel of the crown". The district has the biggest used cars market which attracts buyers from far off places. It is also famous for the tractor market. In the year 2019-20 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 20,78,354 lakhs at current price and Rs. 15,65,341 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 18,53,000 lakhs at current price and Rs. 13,87,280 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 1,70,000 at current price and Rs. 1,27,273 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.

The district is an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of its most recognised educational institutions are Desh Bhagat Institute of Engineering and Management, Baba Isher Singh Institute of Sciences and Technology, Lala Lajpat Rai Institute of Engineering and Technology, ISF College of Pharmacy, Baba Mangal Singh Nursing Training Institute, Dayanand Mathradas College, SD College for Women, YRS Polytechnic College, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 70.68% including 74.44% are males and 66.48% are females.

During the year 2018, there were 92,284 domestic tourists who visited the district. Tota Singh, an eminent Indian politician and the present cabinet minister of the Punjab state with the portfolio of Minister for Agriculture was born in the Moga district. He is a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal (political party). The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. The place is full of many exciting sites with historical and religious significance. Lala Lajpat Rai, the great freedom fighter was born at Dhudhike village in the Moga district which is a matter of pride for the district. Some prominent Gurudwaras in the district are Mehdeyana Sahib, Dina Sahib and Takhtupura. Geeta Bhawan, located at the southern part of the Moga city is a huge and beautiful temple. Further, the place Moga has a great variety of parks such as Kashmiri Park, Nehru Park, Shahidi Park, etc.
