About Thoubal District (Manipur)

Historically, the region is the witness of several bloody battles. In April 1891, the last freedom fight was fought against British. In May 1983 it was emerged as a separate district when Thoubal sub-division of the earlier Manipur Central district (later Imphal district) with all its administrative units was shifted to create a new district. Then, in November 1983, Thoubal district was bifurcated into Thoubal and Kakching sub-divisions including Kakching and Waikhong Tehsils.

Kamala Devi Yumnam is a footballer. She has place as a midfielder and an occasional striker in the Indian team. She was the member of the Indian team in the SAFF Championships in 2010, 2012 and 2014. She was the best player of the 2012 tournament. She also plays for Indian Railways club. She also participated in 2014 Asian games and scored five goals. Sandhyarani Devi Wangkhem is a martial art athlete from Manipur. She participates in Women's Sanshou (Wushu) 56 kg category. In 2008 and 2010, she took part in Asian Games and won the Bronze medal and Silver medal. She is serving as a Central Reserve Police Force constable. She got Silver medal at Asian Martial Arts Games in 2009.

Geographically, the district has a total 514 sq. km. area and occupies the rank 8th in State and 613rd in India on the bases of this size. It lies at 24°65' N latitude, 93°99' E longitude and 790 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 11.55% forest area of the total geographical area. It is surrounded by Senapati district on the North, Ukhrul and Chandel districts on the East, Churchandpur and Bishnupur districts on the South and Imphal West and Imphal East districts on the West. Imphal and the Thoubal are main rivers flow through the district. The district has a moderate climate with relatively abundant and widespread rainfall. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 900.4 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, The district has total 3 sub divisions namely Thoubal, Lilong and Kakching. It is divided into 9 towns and 103 villages. Meiteilon (Manipuri) is its official language. In the state of Manipur with an allotted district code of 276th district of Thoubal came into existence on 25th May, 1983 with its administrative headquarters located at Thoubal, situated at a distance of 25 kms from the state capital.

Demographically, according to the 2011 census, the district has a total number of 85,295 households with a total population of 4,22,168 comprising 2,10,845 are males and 2,11,323 are females which causing it to rank 3rd in the state and 555th in India. The density of population of the district is 821 (persons per sq km.). The sex ratio is pegged at 1002 (females per 1000 males) while the child ratio stands at 935 (females per 1000 males). The population growth rate during the period 2001 to 2011 was 15.94% including 15.69% were males and 16.18% were females. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 2,511 out of which 1,465 were males and 1,046 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 4 out of which 1 were males and 3 were females. As per 2011 census the major religions in the district are Hindu and Muslim with 63.28% and 25.42% of the total population. According to 2001 census the principal language in the district is Manipuri with 98.46%.

Economically, the district is dependent on agriculture primarily. The district is very fertile and good for irrigation. Rice, paddy and sugarcane are the main production here. Oilseeds, maize, potatoes, pulses, chilies and pineapples are other main products of the district. The district produces sugarcane on the largest scale in Manipur. Vegetables cabbages, cauliflower, different kinds of peas, gourds, pumpkins, etc are also grown here. Animal Husbandry and fishing also boost the economy of the district. In the year 2006-07 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 87,090 lakhs at current price and Rs. 75,305 lakhs at constant prices in the year 1999-2000. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2006-07 was Rs. 78,892 lakh at current price and Rs. 69,475 lakh at constant prices in the year 1999-2000. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2006-07 was Rs. 19,417 at current price and Rs. 4,063 at constant prices in the year 1999-2000.

Education wise, according to 2011 census, the literacy rate is 74.47% out of which 85% are males and 64.09% are females. The total literate population of the district is 2,69,304 including 1,52,617 are males and 1,16,687 are females. The total number of illiterates in the district is 1,52,864 including 58,228 are males and 94,636 are females. Thoubal and Kakching are one of the main educational hubs in the district. Thoubal College, Kha-Manipur College, Waikhom Mani Girls College, Kakching Khunou College, Y. K. College, Jawaharlal Novodya vidyalaya, Padhma-Ratna school, K.M blooming Eng. School, Chairel Faith Academy, Arash Public English School, Hijam Irabot Memorial Public School, IGNOU study center Thoubal college, Charangpat High School, Jamia-milia Academy and Evergreen Flower Eng. School are some of the main educational institutes here.

B D Behring belongs to the Janata Dal party. He was the member of Rajya Sabha in 1990. He was also the part of Manipur Legislative Assembly in 1990 and 2000. Mohammed Alimuddin was the former Chief Minister of Manipur in 1972. He belonged to the Manipur Peoples Party. He also held the post of the Speaker and Finance Minister. Haji Abdul Salam is the member of the Indian National Congress political party. He is the member of Rajya Sabha for second term of 2014-2020. Okram Ibobi Singh belongs to the Indian National Congress. He was the Chief Minister of the state of Manipur till 2002.

In the year of 2019-20, there were total 38 foreign tourists who visited here. The district has several famous tourist places to visit. These places are Khongjom War Memorial, Uyokching at Kakching, Thongam Mondum Mahadev, Waithou, Serou. Mohammed Alimuddin was the former Chief Minister of Manipur belonged to the Manipur Peoples Party. He also held the post of Speaker and Finance Minister.
