The district of Janjgir-Champa came into existence on 25th May, 1998 and it is popularly known as “the heart of Chhattisgarh” due to its central position in the state. The Vishnu Mandir, located in the district proves its golden history. The Vishnu Mandir is an ancient artistic sample of Vaishnav community. It is the place full of temples and each having its own unique past. Moreover, the Janjgir Champa city is also well known as the city of kosa (silk), Kasha (bronze) and Kanchan (gold). historically it has been proved that the district headquarter city, Janjgir was under the rule of Maharaja Jajawalya Dev of Kulchury dynasty for along period of time. The Hasdeobango project has been considered as a life supporting canal for the Janjgir-Champa district.

Geographically, the district encompasses a geographical area of 3,853 sq km. area and occupies the ranks 18th in State and 319th in India on the bases of this size. It lies at 21°98'N latitude, 82°65'E longitude and 294 m altitude. In the year 2021, the district had total 3.93% forest area of total geographical area. The Hasdeo-Bango canal drains water for irrigation to the district. Under this project 3/4 area of the district will be covered for irrigation. The climate of the district remains extremely hot and humid in the summers. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1294.5 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administrative wise, the district is divided into 10 sub-district, 15 towns and 892 villages. Hindi is its official language. The district of Janjgir-Champa came into existence on the 25th May, 1998 in the state of Chhattisgarh. Its district headquarters is located at Naila Janjgir town, situated at a distance of 170 km. from the state capital.

Demographically, according to 2011 census, the district has a total number of 3,77,496 households with a total of 16,19,707 including 8,15,717 are males and 8,03,990 are females. The density of population of the district is 420 (persons per sq km.). The sex ratio is pegged at 986 (females per 1000 males) while the child ratio stands at 950 (females per 1000 males). As per 2011 census the percentage of major religions practiced by the people of this region is Hindu with 98.60% of the total total population. According to 2011 census, the percentage of the principal languages of the region is Hindi at 98.90%. The population growth rate during the period 2001-2011 was 22.94% out of which 23.71% were males and 22.18% were females. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 28,826 out of which 14,796 were males and 14,026 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 10,921 out of which 6,508 were males and 4,409 were females.

Economically, agriculture is the main source of income for the people of the district. The district produces food grains mainly and provides local market for fresh farm supplies. It is main centre for agricultural trade and famous for lime-stone. The district has become power hub due to 52 power plants. Janjgir-Champa district is a major producer of food grains in the state. The GDDP or Gross District Domestic Product during the period 2006-07 was Rs 2,89,296 lakh at Current Price and Rs 2,07,604 lakh at Constant Prices during the period 1999-2000. The NDDP, or Net District Domestic Product during the period 2006-07 was Rs 2,58,993 lakh at Current Price and Rs 1,85,326 lakh at Constant Prices during the period 1999-2000. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, at Factor Cost during the period 2006-07 was Rs.17,606 lakh at Current Price and Rs 14,710 lakh at Constant Prices during the period 1999-2000.

Education wise, according to 2011 census, the literacy rate is 73.07% including 84.72% are males and 61.31% are females. The total number of literates in the district is 10,19,634 including 5,93,679 are males and 4,25,955 are females. Gyan Bharti higher secondary school, Gyan bharti higher secondary school (janjgir), Lions English Higher Secondary School (Champa), DBM Agriculture Higher Secondary School (Link Road Janjgir), Shri Kailashpat Singhania Hr Sec. School (Gopal Nagar), R. K. Singh Higher Secondary School (Akaltara) are the name of the some important schools of the district. There are also available a number of colleges such as Pt Hari Shanker college of education ( janjgir), Utkarsh college of education (janjgir), Ayushman nursing college {ANM }(Janjgir), Indian Institute of Handloom and Textile Technology (Champa), Govt. M.M.R Post Graduate college (Champa), Thakur Indrajeet Singh Mahavidyalaya (Akaltara), etc. There are also a number of ITIs namely DBM Industrial Training Institute (Link Road Janjgir), Govt. Industrial Training Institute (Janjgir), Govt. Industrial Training Institute ( Akaltara), Yash ITI( Lachhanpur, Champa), etc.

Rajesh Nandini Singh is the member of Indian National Congress, born on 23rd March, 1967 in the Janjgir-Champa district. She represented constituency of Madhya Pradesh in the 15th Lok Sabha. She also served as the member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative assembly from 1993 to 1998.

The district has numerous famous historical and religious places to visit. These places are Vishnu Mandir Janjgir, Adbhar Devi Temple, Madanpurgarh Devi Mandir, Pithampur Shiv Mandir, Ghatadai Paharia Tripur Singar Devi, Turridham Shiv Temple, Kanhara, Dewar Ghata, Damudhara Rishabthirth, Laxmaneshwar Temple, Kharaud, Shivarinarayan Temple and Chandrahasini Temple. The Vishnu Mandir of the district tells about the glorious past of this district. It is an ancient artistic sample of Vaishnav community. During 2018, total 22,60,062 domestic tourists visited the above places.
